Of Red Rocks Large and Larger

Before my trip to “The Meadows” I bought a new point and shoot camera. To be precise, I picked up the Canon PowerShot A570 IS. Despite the fact that my Canon scanner/printer won’t scan to my iMac –I have no idea why and am lacking the patience to to the tech support tree at present, since that just means more projects to lie around– I’m a Canon man. I shoot on a Canon Mini DV when I make shorts, and I lust after the XL H1 with an unholy passion.

At first I thought I was just going to get a lot of interior architectural shots… like this one of one of the fanciest bars I’ve ever seen inside the Red Rock Casino, out Summerlin way.

Suffice it to say that I was bowled over by the design there, as my previous Casino experience was limited to trips to Tahoe and one night in the Tropicana for various weddings.

Yet I had no idea just how close the most artificial city on the planet is to one of the most awesome sights in nature, Red Rock canyon.

Unfortunately I wasn’t thinking about the structure of this post when I was out shooting photos in the desert, otherwise I would have taken the pains to have my companion stop the car and I would have shot the thin border between the newest subdivision of Las Vegas and the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
You’ll have to settle for the slightly out of date Google satellite shot that WordPress won’t let me embed instead (follow the link):

Settle for that, and a few more shots of… a hell.. 1000 words and all that:

This one’s my favorite… reminds me of Muppets.
