Election years are kind to me, in most ways but one.
Both 2000 and 2004 were banner years, right up until the third act when reality seemed to break down and the impossible happened. Twice. In exactly the same way.
So it could be extreme naiveté that has me feeling optimistic about the 365 days that we have stretching out in front of us. Naiveté it may be, but right now, with just two days before the Iowa caucuses kick off America’s biggest political ritual I have to embrace the optimism. I’m getting too old to hold onto cynicism and fear. Those of us who were born in the 70’s have a civic duty to step up and offer some blind hope, if only for a season, that things ’round here can change for the better.
There’s a lot to see and do in the year ahead, and I’m looking forward to the challenges and opportunities it brings.
